Trent Reznor does NOT want to fuck you like an animal – Concert Review 5/08/09

Trent Reznor does NOT want to fuck you like an animal – Concert Review 5/08/09

04trent1 262x300 Trent Reznor does NOT want to fuck you like an animal Concert Review 5/08/09There are few things more powerful than an entire crowd booing. I heard just that last night at the kickoff of the Nine Inch Nails/Jane’s Addiction “NINJA Tour” in W. Palm Beach at Cruzan Amphitheatre. 20,000 people began booing at the end of Nine Inch Nails set combined with a chorus of “Are You Fucking Kidding Me?” Let me explain why.

I was fortunate enough to secure FREE box seats for the show from my employer and was thrilled as I own everything from Pretty Hate Machine to The Slip. The tour is advertised as “Nine Inch Nails WITH Jane’s Addiction and special guest Street Sweeper Social Club.” These center stage seats also came with VIP parking passes. The passes were emblazoned with a shiny picture of NIN (only) and also contained the above phrase. This indicates that NIN is headlining.  But maybe that’s just me.

Even though I’m not really a Jane’s Addiction fan, I figured it would be interesting to see them live as Perry Ferrell is a complete nutbag and was sure to provide a few RUFKM moments.

So, it was quite shocking to be in the pisser at 7:50PM and hear, through the echoes of the bathroom, what sounded like NIN.

Yes, kids. NIN was playing first……. in the daylight.

There were several problems with this situation:

1. Trent is part vampire
2. The amphitheatre was not even half full  as people expected NIN to play at 9PM
3. They were playing some extremely obscure shit
4. They had a minimal light show, no backdrop or effects

First, here’s how I can describe the light show. I’ve seen NIN several times, the light show is always great.  Not this time.  You know when bands have that huge pupil melting light that bands put on the crowd and say “Let’s see your hands!” or “I wanna see you off your seats?” Well, imagine 100 of those same white lights flashing on and off FOREVER. I hope nobody there had epilepsy.

Did I mention that they were playing in the daylight?

But wait, maybe they would play a great show to make up for these shenanigans! Plus, Trent announced that this would be NIN’s last tour! Um…no.

Over the course of the meandering (read: boring) 90 minute set, the following songs were not played:

1.  The Perfect Drug

2. Besides “Head Like a Hole” nothing from Pretty Hate Machine

3.  Newer solid songs/singles like “Only” or “Discipline”

4. Hurt

5. Closer

No, Trent does not want to fuck you like an animal. I am a huge fan of varied set lists but to not include “Hurt” or at least “Closer” is completely absurd. These are his biggest songs.  He should’ve also ended the set by taking a huge Cleveland steamer on stage and then threw chunks of his feces at the audience.  It would’ve had the same effect.  He favored to instead play that awful David Bowie song “I’m afraid of Americans,” and obscure, monotonous tracks like crap from Ghosts I-XXXIIMLK.  I have been to countless concerts and have never seen a more disappointed crowd due to the setlist, showmanship, and false advertising.

Then Jane’s Addiction came on.  As I stated before, not a big fan.

medium janes addiction Trent Reznor does NOT want to fuck you like an animal Concert Review 5/08/09They rocked.  The music sounded great, the light show was impressive, the backdrop included 2 naked chicks, a movie screen dropped down during several songs, my wife was happy that Dave Navarro doesn’t own a shirt, and Perry pranced around in a sequined bull fighter outfit looking gayer than a three dollar bill.

I knew he would provide an RUFKM moment, in a good way.

They worked the crowd, played all their hits, were energetic and Navarro killed it on guitar.  I was very impressed, especially since I know only their popular songs.  They made up for Trent and his cronies falling flat on their face.

Oh, and that weirdly titled opening act “Street Sweeper Social Club?”  This is a new band from Tom Morello, guitarist from  Rage Against The Machine.  They played a 7 song tight set and I will be buying their new album when it comes out next month.  It was their first show EVER and it sounded like they had been playing for years.  I would say it sounds like Rage with less rage and more funk.

Oh and Mr. Reznor?  Stay out the South Florida area for quite awhile.  There are 20,000 people who want your head on a platter.  If I had actually paid for my ticket, I’d issue the hit myself.

  1. Brian says:

Sorry, I vehemently disagree with this review, this is probably THE BEST setlist nin has ever had. You realize they’ve played closer/hurt 10 million times already. This is the last time NIN is touring and the setlist is geared towards hardcore fans, of which you’re clearly not.

    • Loose Cannon says:

First, I’ve never used vehemently in a sentence, but you have. Well done. The set list doesn’t matter as much as the fact that the stage show, the showmanship, and the overall execution was shit. As a “hardcore” fan, you must admit that singing along to Hurt/Closer with 20,000 other people is, at least, enjoyable. If the set list was so “hardcore,” why did he play Head Like A Hole, or The Hand That Feeds?

      I await your wisdom.

  2. Buddy says:

You’ve got to be kidding me with this review. This is a sarcastic joke right? THIS is the type of setlist an artist plays when he’s doing a show for his fans, not people vaguely familiar with some hits. I was there. The only boos were when he said they were calling it quits (for a while) and when the PA got cut and “Hurt” was about to be played.

Btw, nothing from Ghosts was played. Get your facts straight before you bash a concert.

  3. Hecate Dracul says:

HAHAHAHA!!! You are too funny. I love people who claim to be NiN fans and then are disappointed when he doesn’t play popular tracks. TROLL ALERT!

I wish 3/4 of the redneck infused crowd weren’t there. Oh yeah, and the crowd was booing when he said it was the last tour. You could get your facts straight but why bother? You make comedy, though.

Maybe you should catch Creed. That seems more up your alley. :D

  4. Ryan says:

Because he’s Trent motherfucking Reznor. He does what he wants. It’s not his fault the PA died before they could finish the set.

  5. Kyle says:

This is quite possibly the worst review I’ve ever read. And this is the internet we are talking about here.

The fact that you have no attention span and no appreciation for live music is of no concern to Trent Reznor. Why are you hung up on radio only hits from 15 years ago? They’ve toured the US ridiculously over the last 3 plus years, and if you havent seen them by now, you were never going to them. And seeing as how you have seen the hits before already (or so you claim – I call bullshit), then why do you need to see them again? Them opening for JA is a sign of respect, he opened for them back in ‘91 at Lolla, and he decided to open for them now despite the obvious fact that the NIN fanbase is 10X more rabid and alive than the Jane’s fans are. I’d call that class, but that’s just me.

Nothing from Ghosts was played either, for the record.

Guess what? He is not trying to entertain douchebags who know nothing about music and who got their tickets for free. If you cant enjoy professional musicians for 1.5 hours who are true masters of their craft , regardless of the songs they are playing, then you my friend are exactly what is wrong with the music scene today (and the “blog” scene, for that matter).

Fans have been dying for songs like The Becoming, Last, & Somewhat Damaged if you knew anything about the band you would know that. Instead you know nothing, and only showed up because it was for free, and surprise, surprise…..

you had nothing better to do that day, and you just wanted to get paid.

    Fucking lame. Go home hipster.

  6. Greg says:

well, I can tell you that hurt was on the setlist for the encore, but somone fucked up the PA system, so it didn’t happen.

Closer will never be played again, because its quite simply played out.

The perfect drug has NEVER been played, and I don’t expect it to start making the setlist anytime soon.

  7. Jesus says:

While this amused me, I’d like to point out somethings. First, not a single track from Ghosts was played. Not one! Yet, you claim that “obscure” Ghosts songs were played… What? Second, “false advertising”. Example please. Not once did Trent say “I’m gonna go up there and play a 90 minute set of radio hits” or “Every night is Closer night!”. In fact, he stated the opposite; shows littered with stuff that hasn’t been played before/often and, specifically, no Closer. At all. I’m not sure which advertising you’ve seen, but it surely wasn’t for this tour judging by your complaints. Either that, or you’re BSing your readers for attention.

    • Loose Cannon says:

The false advertising refers to “Nine Inch Nails” WITH Jane’s Addiction” It’s on every promo out there in print, etc.
On the actual ticket stub it says Nine Inch Nails / Jane’s Addiction.
Since the place was only half full when they started playing, I think I was not the only one confused on that one.

The “Ghosts” part was a reference to obscurity as the majority of those tracks lick donkey balls and are overpriced even as a free download initially offered. However, if you are having issues falling asleep, put that CD on ASAP. As far as if I’ve seen NIN before… yes, twice. I saw them on in Chicago on the Fragile tour with A Perfect Circle. It was an incredible show both musically and visually. I also saw them in Chicago during the With Teeth tour with Queens of the Stone Age. Both times they put on great shows and I had the same expectation for this concert.

Can you honestly say that this was “The Best!” you’ve seen NIN live in all measurable aspects?

As for the other guy who said that the booing was for this being the last tour…. false. He mentioned that this was the last tour about 4-5 songs into the concert. The booing was at the end of the set.

I’m sorry that I couldn’t hear the cheering from the 12 people who have commented over the disappointment of thousands of others.

      Deez Nuts,

  8. Tyler says:

Perhaps Hurt was going to be played in the (failed) encore, but Trent’s even said that he’s tired of performing Closer (and singing “I want to fuck you like an animal” with 20,000 other people isn’t enjoyable, it’s just creepy). Personally, I’m glad that NIN is only playing a few radio hits like Head Like A Hole and The Hand That Feeds, because that should keep the people who only listen to their “hits” (from the sound of it, people like you) at least a little bit satisfied.
In response to the “Jane’s playing after NIN? WTF?” experience you had, all I can say is that Trent even posted on the NIN website a few weeks ago that Jane’s was playing last, and it’s even in the title: NINJA, not JANIN.
And as for the whole “boohoo they didn’t play this or this or this,” so what? You got the debuts of Metal, I’m Afraid Of Americans, and Gone, Still, as well as the reintroduction of almost every song that was performed last night.
By the way, they didn’t play any songs from Ghosts. Your bad.

  9. mike says:

Cause ive sang along with that song 6 times already at different shows. Trent outright said he would not be playing closer at all this tour, the song is dead, instead he busted out a set containing 2 songs he had never played live before EVER (metal, and Im Afraid Of Americans), if he played the perfect drug it would have made 3 songs they have never played live. The set was also cut short for technical reasons, trent was so upset he threw his mic into the lights, Robin was left holding his acoustic guitar ready to go (most likely for lamer/into the void and to close with hurt, which they played during the sound check earlier that afternoon)

  10. mike says:

and the saying is as Queer as a 3 dollar bill, not gayer you nitwit, thats as bad as biff in back to the future with the screen door on a battleship quote.

  11. Dude says:

They were booing because there was no encore, not because they didn’t play Closer.

Also that awful David Bowie song got a way bigger pop from the crowd than Closer has ever gotten.

  12. Todd says:

In general, I thought the NIN performance was good. The reason for the booing was obviously the screwed up encore.

  13. Nobody says:

You, sir, are a fucking idiot.

  14. Bootleg Eddie says:

I have been to every NIN show since Lolla 91. While this was not a “production” with this set list, by far best show ever. Encore was cut off do to technical problems but the author does not seem to get that. (Hurt is in encore) and a man should not have to play the same song (Closer) every night for the rest of his life. Who ever wrote this is not a fan or the would have appreciate shit like Last, Piggy (nothing can Stop me Now version) or even the Becoming (still version).

  15. Mr Self Destruct says:

Your review sucks. End of story. Myself I look forward to hearing some of the uncommon NIN songs live. As far as NIN opening? sure I’m bummed but for christ’s sake. Trent just wants to take it easy and watch one of his fav bands play. You = Fail

  16. homphgomph says:

    Your entitled to your opinion.

I’m entitled to think your a fucking retard whose just begging for attention.

  17. laughing at you says:

If you look at any nin relation community you would of already know that nin were playing first, they’d be playing rare tracks for fans instead of trying to turn new ones, and that there would be little production to enable them to play greatly varied setlists.

And stuff from ghosts?? clearly you’re a joke and don’t know anything. Those tickets were wasted on you.

  18. leap says:

You’re fucking retarded. Honestly? A huge fan?? Suck my dick and go away. You know NIN isn’t The Rolling fucking Stones, or Metallica, so why are you expecting the same old, same old? Really?

    Fuck you.

  19. This review makes me very happy. So thank you.

Someone who expects to hear “The Perfect Drug” at a NIN show has certainly done their research. Go journalism!

I’m very glad to hear you’re pissed off. It means I’m gonna love this tour. I’ve seen NIN over 20 times in the past decade. Wanna know a secret? “Closer” was played at every single one of them. Do you wine when Radiohead refuses to sing “Creep.” Yeah, you probably do.

You know what song I’ve never heard them play? Yeah, that shitty David Bowie song, or hell, that obscure piano piece off “Still.” Yup, they played “Head Like A Hole” too, and I must admit, I would have preferred “Happiness in Slavery” (a better closer IMHO), but Trent must be trying to appease the VIP Box crowd.

Go figure. What a sell out, am I right? Lulz…

I must ask, for someone who owns all their albums, have you listened to them? Or do you just skip to that “Fuck you like an animal song?”

You know, what? This isn’t because you wrote a negative review. NIN has played their fare share of bad shows. I’ve seen them, and experienced them. But you miss the target entirely. Because this isn’t for you.

It’s for us. A guy who complains about not hearing “Hurt” won’t give a shit NIN won’t be touring again. A guy who creams when they pull out “Metal” does. I normally wouldn’t take the time out of my day to inform you of this fact. But really, you have put a giant smile on my face.

The NIN I want to see is a rock band. Not from a box seat. Not with a light show. I’ve been there and done that. They’ve been doing it for 20 years, my friend. Having been to both shows you mentioned above, I can firmly say you don’t know, which is you’re loss. Boy, they ripped through “Closer” in both of ‘em eh? Ended both with “Hurt,” right? Did they play “The Perfect Drug?” Hmm. I can’t remember. Shucks.

Bottom Line: I haven’t bought a ticket to this tour yet, being as I saw them 4 times this past year. But sir, you’ve sealed the deal.

    So, thanks man. Good job.

  20. frank says:

i reckon you’re trying to get a reaction, and i’m a little ashamed to be responding to this, but as some have said, this is the worst review i have ever read of a show. full of erroneous facts. the perfect drug has yet to be played live by the band, but if you’re such a big fan, i figure you’d know that by now .

anyway, reznor is playing what he feels right for a farewell tour. since closer was written, it has appeared on 95% of the setlists. though i understand that many casual fans would still want to hear it live, it’s grown monotonous for the band to play, lost a lot of meaning and power, and therefore, is a welcome breath of fresh air for us to experience more rare cuts, and i’m sure for them to play something a little more obscure. don’t like it? he’s gone on record several times to say: “stay at home, we don’t need you there.” people bitch when he plays those songs all the time, and now, a whole new crop of whiners will appear to bitch about two or three consistently played tracks. awesome.

also: trent has explained several times that that janes addiction would be closing the show. nothing a simple call to the venue or further research could not have rectified. it’s your own fault for failing to do your homework all around.

  21. anthony says:

Straight from Trent on the nin.com forums today

    Hey guys-

This will likely be my last explanation of this, so feel free to post this around wherever.

    Regarding the NIN/JA tour:
It was my idea, decision and job to convince all parties (from my own band to Janes’) to play before JA. Here is why. We’ve become tired of the “formal”, very structured LITS – type production and way of presenting the band. The idea of walking onstage as the sun is about to set and play a bunch of unexpected material that’s exciting for us to play without the bogged-down, flashy production appeals to me. You get to see us in a way you haven’t before. Yes, it’s different. Yes, the set lists will amaze some and bum-out many others. Everyone had ample opportunities to see LITS, and that era is over. We play our set leading you into the evening bathed in only white light in a physically tight setup, then Jane’s come out in full color and openness. The challenge for us is greater, the set feels much riskier (especially with the challenging flow of the set lists I’m making) and that makes it exciting and valid for us.
The NIN/JA tour is generally geared more towards the hardcore NIN fan. We’re not trying to play the greatest hits – we’ve done that over and over. Don’t expect the same shit every night – that’s why I relaxed the camera / recording policy. You’ll likely be able to find what you want out there somewhere, from wherever. I’m treating these last shows as individual, finite, precious events that I’m sure will result in some polarization of your responses.

    See you out there.
    TR

  22. me says:

there’s no real point in my commenting. this has all been said better already, but as one one of the aforementioned the 12 fans, i just can’t fathom how you – someone who tries to come off as a legitimate nin fan – could have missed EVERYTHING that’s been mentioned about the tour. not just one thing, your entire school newspaper-caliber review consists solely of issues that have been addressed multiple times over the past month or two – some things have been talked about as long as half a year ago. people who are only cursorily into nine inch nails have heard of all of these things. every single issue has been addressed.
also, you want to hear a guy who’s almost 50 sing “closer?” that’s pretty gross.

  23. Angela says:

Wait. You’re suprised that they didn’t play The Perfect Drug?
Next time you’re lucky enough to get VIP seats I reccomend that you do your research ahead of time. The set times have been public for awhile now.

  24. Loose Cannon says:

I am extremely sorry. I did not know that I needed to do proper research on Nine Inch Nails prior to going to a show. I have lived in complete ignorance for years by simply enjoying myself by listening to the CDs I own of theirs and attending their previous concerts.
I will no longer use common sense when it comes to who is headlining, who is not. I will look at set lists to find out what is/is not acceptable for me to expect them to play.
I will no longer have a sense of humor about things. I will not smile. I will expect a light show has the same quality as parking 3 police cars on stage and turning on the sirens. With thesis in one hand and a chip I will place on my shoulder in the other, I will attempt to rock. When I am done I will return to my cave, sit in my angry chair, and shake my fist in the air.

  25. There are so many things wrong with this review, I don’t know where to start. However, I’ll give it a try:

    1. Who the hell is NIN and this Trent Reznor clown?
    2. Why would anyone voluntarily go see and listen to such nonsense?
    3. Who are all these people who drank the NIN Kool-Aid and think that if this guy farts it is artistic? Can they be anymore pathetic in their adoration of their retard king?
    4. This is not the last tour by any means. How many times have we heard that from about every single band from the 80’s?

Overall, based on your review — I’d just as soon subject myself to a Hinder/Nickelback concert than these types of shenanigans.

  26. Renato says:

I have a little question for you:

DID YOU NOT SEE THE FUCKING LIGHTS IN THE SKY TOUR? that basically covered all that you fucking wanted in a nin show, and it was last year

  27. Tomanson says:

Im not gonna rant, but id also like to say that loose cannon is a fucking cretin.

add me to the apparent “12 people cheering” please!

nin concerts are MUCH better off without bellends like this!

  28. bigduker says:

I agree with everyone here that Loose Cannon is a fucking bag of hot duke. However, I showed up late for NIN set because I thought they were playing at the headlining spot and the light show sucked. For that I agree but the set list was amazing. They played Metal! Hell Yeah!

  29. Romano says:

    1. Loosee CAnnon is a dooshe.
    2. i liked to the 300 song with NIN so i hopes they play.
    3. Ican’t wehat to see teh show.

  30. CeonFoosheys says:

    I DON’T KNOW WHY I’M YELLING!

  31. Loose Cannon says:

    I love lamp.

    Really. I do.

  32. Jen says:

I’m glad to have seen this review, because it validates my own experience.

I was at the show in Tampa on Saturday, and myself, and the three others that I attended with were all quite literally falling asleep during NIN’s set. Quite literally. It was my first time enjoying NIN live, but two others in our group had seen them twice before, and the lot of us were bored to tears.

I wouldn’t go so far as to say that I’m a diehard NIN fan, but they are a band that I’ve looked forward to seeing since I was a little girl. And no, not because I suspect Trent Reznor wants to fuck me like an animal. Because they possess a sound and a presence that I’ve loved since I was a kid. I was giddy and unable to properly sleep Friday night; I was so pumped to finally see them. Call me juvenile, call me silly.

I knew almost every song they played, but I just wasn’t very… excited to hear them. It was sort of a feeling of ‘Oh… you’re playing that?’ There was little to no crowd energy to feed off of, and almost everyone around us were either sitting with their hands in their laps like they were in church, or carrying on conversations. Or of course, tripping acid and having a better time than anybody else.

Since it was an amphitheatre, I obviously wasn’t expecting a fantastic sort of stage show, but there appeared to be no effort put into appearances at all. The strobbing lights looked cheap and almost last minute. And compared to the beautiful, flamboyant stage show that Jane’s Addiction offered, it made NIN look like a second rate opener. They might have been going for barebones, exposed or maybe even an unplugged sort of feel, but I think they missed the mark.

Instead of nurturing the crowd while giving some love to their most diehard fans, they alienated a large portion of the crowd at a live event. No matter what the motives, it’s unfair to the ticker buyer. I won’t go into economical hardships, but if a few thousand people pay, travel out to the theater, sit in the sun and buy overpriced drinks to see you ….play your hits.

Play your B sides to your heart’s content, but play your goddamn hits. I don’t mean simply radio fodder, but the songs with some punch, some beat… The entire concert felt like slow, dreamy filler background music.

If Trent is tired of touring and wants a low key sort of intimate tour… I can respect that. But there’s a difference in respecting an artist’s choices, and being a blind follower, claiming to have wet myself over this show when it was a complete and total let down. It doesn’t make them any less of a band, and it doesn’t make me any less of a fan, it was what it was – a great performance of sleepy material.

And for those of you who claim that the entire place loved the set list…. when they played ‘Head like a Hole’, it was very very obvious what the concert could, and SHOULD have been. The crowd came alive, the band’s energy was amazing, and every single person in the place wanted it.

Then they went back to the slow material. There wasn’t booing, but there was a definite smattering of disappointed noises from all around.

That’s just my opinion. Don’t bash others for simply stating theirs.

    • Loose Cannon says:

Wow. What a great comment. A balanced perspective from someone who likes NIN but doesn’t gargle with “Treznor’s Taint Juice” every morning. A review from their second stop in Tampa. I cannot wait for more reviews throughout this tour. If Trent wants to perform an intimate, stripped down concert…….. do it in a 2,000 capacity club. Don’t sell it as an arena experience and give the audience an expensive nap.

  33. MindlessMind says:

Alright, first off, It was advertised QUITE WELL that Jane’s was going on last. Trent made the decision himself.
Also, If you want to go to a NIN show to see “Closer” and “Hurt” maybe you should have done it in the last 20 years, not this year. This year is NIN’s chance to play songs the real fans want to hear. “Real fans” as in the ones that have heard those songs five million times. Trent has also stated before that he wanted to do a stripped down show, focused on the music rather than the production. If you wanted fancy lights you should have gone last year. This is the year for minimal stage setup and more obscure songs, the ones the hardcore fans want to hear. That’s what this tour is about, it’s for the hardcore fans.

Closer was played 90 times last year. How many shows did NIN play last year? 90. No one needs to hear it again.

  34. Brett says:

Thanks for this review. After reading this review and seeing the setlists from the past 3 shows (so far) on the NINJA tour, it confirms that this is a tour for actual NIN fans. I still haven’t bought a ticket for their upcoming show near me, but I’ll find the money and get one now. Both Jen and Loose Cannon would have been better off to stay home. If you haven’t read it yet, Trent has said that this is a tour for NIN fans. Not people that think Closer and HLAH are the tits. Every real NIN fan is sick of hearing the “hits”. When I learned about him playing Metal, Home, The Way out is Through and LITS, I almost came in my pants. This is a dream setlist, as others have said. If all you know are the NIN songs from the radio, I don’t recommend that you bother to show up for any of the concerts on this tour.

  35. Clarasaurus Rex says:

For sake of arguing, I will not point out everything ridiculous and pathetic in the review, much like most everyone else has. What I will say is…

The only time I saw them live was in the early/mid 90’s when I was too young to remember much of it. Mostly it was my mom trying to expose me to good music than me actually wanting to go. Since then I’ve been a real big fan but never got a chance to go to other shows, for one reason or another. Now I’m going, and I couldn’t be happier with what I’ll get.

I have And All That Could Have Been and Beside You In Time on DVD. I have various other tours on my iPod. I can watch Closer in many variations with varying light shows all day long if I want. But when I go on the 30th, I’m going to get a show that’s meant to be more personal than the previous ones. I’m going to get Trent, in all his glory, playing what HE wants. Not what we want. That’s more meaningful to me than hearing Hurt. In fact, I hope I don’t have to hear it. I’m so tired of Hurt, it’s ridiculous. I’m excited to find out what he plays. If I want to see different songs, I can go online and watch what others recorded from other nights that I didn’t attend. That makes me extremely happy.

Also, I’m not as big of a Jane’s Addiction fan, so I would rather not have to sit through their set waiting anxiously for NIN, when I could instead watch NIN, and then kick back and relax while JA finishes the night off.

Seriously though, you own all the CDs and you still want to hear Closer and Hurt? Fucking really???
Besides, you didn’t even have to pay, you weren’t planning on going in the first place, so shut the fuck up.

Je-SUS. I can’t wait to see what would happen if you gave a negative review of a concert for a band that was relevant in this decade. Way to stir up the Reznor family because there is no WAY anyone outside of his clan give this much of a shit about NIN anymore. I don’t think Trent cares this much about NIN as some of these people.

  37. spahn says:

is this review serious? really? you weren’t have a fucking orgasm when i’m afraid of americans, the becoming, last (which has NEVER been played live in the US and only a few times before overseas) was played.

come on. don’t come on here and “review” a show as a “long time” nin fan. i had front row center and myself along with the rest of the fans were going NUTS with the setlist. people like you don’t deserve to see NIN live and its a shame that a ticket was wasted on you.

do us all a favor, if nin ever tours again, please don’t bother showing up. i’m sorry that NIN doesn’t cater to the fucking mainstream audience like Bon fucking Jovi or any other garbage act out there and re-hashes the same old shit over and over again. dude, how many times do you really need to hear Closer. and no, i don’t care to sing along to Closer with 20,000 other fans. i cared more singing the line “FIST FUCK” with the hardcore fans around me who appreciated the fact that he was playing the song Last and not fucking closer.

  38. spahn says:

TylerDFC, please shut up and research before you talk out of your ass. there’s a reason there are thousands and thousands of fans registered at ETS and NIN.com forums.

NIN is as relevant as ever. sorry that you don’t care to see that.

  39. Loose Cannon says:

I wanted to let everyone know that I did this review as a public service.

I plan on harnessing the anger from NIN fans and converting into a renewable energy source so we no longer have to rely on fossil fuels.

I think my plan is working.

Also, I think Trent stole my LIte Brite from my garage to use for his stage show. I want it back.

  40. LooseGiblets says:

Ok first off. You don’t need to apologize for your lack of research. You just need to apologize for flunking journalism school and trying to pass this off as something worth reading. If you’re going to write about music you really should have some sort of prior knowledge. Just because you buy cds and listen to the music, doesn’t mean you understand it. This tour isn’t about the morons who want to hear closer because it’s the one from MTV with the scary images!. (Which reminds me, did you tickle your taint when you thought of the headline, cuz I know I would have if I decided that was a ‘clever’ title.)
So I’m sorry your free VIP tickets weren’t good enough. I’m sorry Trent didn’t play your favorite song. I’m sorry you can’t attend a live show without having pikachu and gozira flash across some high-tech bloated screen to help you enjoy the music. Why not try and listen to the songs you’ve NEVER EVER heard performed live and remember that Closer is on that DVD you have at home. (Right, you own that too don’t you?)
Ok I’m done prodding you…. This next paragraph is for the 12 people who cheered.
I really think this review should qualify as a contest winner for free NIN tickets. Seriously, I want you to get free tickets again, so you can go to the next show at your convenience. But wait it doesn’t stop there. You win a free i-phone with the NIN App pre-installed with your LooseGiblets name already signed in. This way when you arrive we can use google earth to track your ass down & beat the crap out of you as closer plays on your newly won phone. And remember…. Wave Goodbye!

by the way, you called this review a public service…
thank you for solidifying my theory “not everyone should have a blog”

  41. Loose Cannon says:

. “Just because you buy cds and listen to the music, doesn’t mean you understand it. ”

That is the greatest quote EVER.

I love it! I’ve been threatened with bodily harm over having an opinion! The anger so far has already powered all of the West Coast!

This is simply incredible. It’s like I walked into church and took a shit on the alter. You do realize that Trent is not God ….. right?

  42. moron says:

Yes Trent is my god and you are wannabe writer.
“as I own everything from Pretty Hate Machine to The Slip. ”
That’s the best copy and paste from wikipedia EVER….

    approve that..

  43. Loose Cannon says:

Worshiper: “Hey NIN is going on tour again. This time they are playing all the really good songs they never play. Trent says he’s sick of being a puppet. I agree with him. No more upbeat catchy songs.”

Common Sense Guy: “You mean he’s going to play all that atmospheric stuff that is good for chilling out to but maybe not the best material live? If he liked that stuff so much why didn’t he play it before when he had over 2 hours to experiment with it?”

Worshiper: “But that’s the really good stuff. All the other stuff is shit. He was always forced to play the upbeat songs by his management! We’ve been tormented for years also and I’ve always hated the 19 concerts I’ve been to before. Until now! Plus he gets to play in the daylight. He’s always hated the dark. ”

Commen Sense Guy: “Oh. So this isn’t just a gimmick to have his followers pay another $75-100 each and be more profitable because he’s using a reduced show that requires less roadies, semis, and simply will make him a huge sum of money to retire on?”

Worshiper: “What? Blasphemy! How dare you. We’re going to have to kill you now because you’re making too much sense.”

    Common Sense Guy: “Fair enough.”

  44. yhbt says:

Don’t you people realize that the article is sarcastic and they really loved the show?

  45. Ash512 says:

This is supposed to be a farewell tour aimed at hardcore fans.

We knew the set times, we knew he was to play obscure stuff which is actually what we crave for. He’s bummed out his hardcore fans for years by playing always the same singles… Now’s the time to bum out the casual fans.

Picture this : I’ve seen eleven shows since the With Teeth era. At every single one of these shows I have heard : Closer, March Of The Pigs, Terrible Lie, Head Like A Hole, Gave Up, Wish, Hurt. NIN has a huge hardcore fan base that travels in other cities to see multiple shows and spends hundreds of dollars yearly on whatever he puts out. If he’s to retire from touring, he’s doing one last world tour to please those fans.

Blame LiveNation on the advertisement. Trent has explained all about this tour as early as December 2008. I am very pleased with those setlists.

  46. L.Marandel says:

Hey, Trent is now what ? 44 years old ? So maybe he just doesn’t want to sing ‘I want to fuck you like an animal’ every night to 10 000 people anymore.. He grew up since he wrote ‘closer’ or ‘happiness in slavery’ and he’s maybe a little ashamed by such lyrics. Give the guy a break, alright ?
And, common sense, NIN is not YOUR band it’s Trent one so when you go to a NIN concert, you go to see/ear what Trent and the band want to give you, not what you want them to give you.
He’s not making the setlist for you either. If you’re not happy with it, don’t go to the show and stop bitching around.
For the lights well.. It’s just lights.. I’ve seen David Bowie on stage and there were no light show and it was one of the best concert ever. If the band is good, and the music is good why the fuck do you care about lights ? Is it ‘common sense’ to you ?

  47. Paul says:

No research, boring, unable to handle criticism in a mature or constructive fashion. I feel sorry for the commenters who didn’t enjoy the show. All the information was presented before hand and ultimately it’s your own fault but we’ve all been in similar situations and it’s unfortunate you likely spent good money on a lackluster experience. This review is crap though. I’m glad your wife thought Dave N. looked hot without his shirt as that’s what makes or breaks concert going experiences. You can try to justify the “three dollar bill” all you want but it’s obvious, in one(twelve+) guys opinion, that you are an idiot. Go gargle manure, Biff *hipster* Cannon.

  48. This guy is a complete bufoon, but I have to agree with some of his points. Unless you are a hardcore fans it might not occur to you to check out the message board to find out if NIN is playing first. I would assume that they were headlining and would be mighty pissed to have missed a portion of their show. I was at the W. Palm beach show and just made it on time with the traffic. I could give to shits about the light show as they played all the stuff I wanted to hear but it was odd seeing them play in the daylight. Plus, this cretin is right about how many people were there. I was in about the 20th row and the pavilion was about half full.

  49. NIN/JA SUCKED says:

If you think the show in FL was bad, it’s chump change compared to the show in Atlanta. The Atlanta NIN/JA show was a nightmare and not worth the $$, time or headache. Those who purchased pre-sale tickets couldn’t get into the venue until NIN was half way done. NIN only played about 1.5 hrs. and sounded like shiit. Reznor was unemotional, forgot lyrics, and a sadsack. JA was all strutting around and sounded weak , boring and not into the show. The crowd was very angry. I want my money back.

  50. Ryan says:

    Your obviously not a fan.

Trent has posted the set times in multiple places BEFORE the tour started. If you were a fan, you would of heard about it. But with that being said, NIN should of been headlining.
And as far as playing “Closer” that song is played out. If you have seen them so many times, i would think your tired of it, Most hardcore fans are…

Your not even a big fan, i can just tell from the tone of the review.

    That setlist was amazing..

  51. Loose Cannon says:

The following is a sample from the concert review on RollingStone.com. This should also make your heads explode. I love the beach ball comment.

    http://www.rollingstone.com/rockdaily/index.php/2009/05/11/nine-inch-nails-and-janes-addiction-launch-ninja-in-florida/?rand=43345

“Taking the stage before Jane’s, while it was still light outside, NIN was at a distinct disadvantage — Reznor does not play summer feel-good hits. He and his three bandmates got straight to their business of calling the world a dark hole full of pathetic humans. Sorry to wax Nietzschean here, but NIN is Apollonian in its pursuit of order, compared to Jane’s Dionysian zest for excess. It’s always been a bit hard to take lyrics like “If there is a hell I’ll see you there” seriously, but it was even harder with a beach ball bouncing around the audience’s heads. “

  52. Loose Cannon says:

Here are comments from people who make sense on the Rolling Stone article. They mention that this type of show should be in a club, not an arena. Also that the tickets were overpriced with the production value and confusion on the fact that NIN was opening. You shouldn’t have to check a message board or band website when a concert is advertised as “NIN with Jane’s Addiction.” I agree.

They should rename the tour from NINJA to CLUSTERFUCK.

    Howard Bedford | 5/12/2009, 11:57 am EST

I was at the Atlanta show and it was extremely disappointing. There was a pre-sale ticketing fiasco. Half of the audience was outside while NIN was playing. The merchandise was priced skyhigh. I have given up on NIN after this concert experience, Trent picking fights with other musicians, Trent being rude to fans, and now this insipid female hustler. I don’t know who Trent Reznor is anymore.
    James Varnum | 5/12/2009, 1:43 pm EST

I felt like the FL show was very down tempo. The pit was the tamest I have ever seen at a concert. Overall the show wasn’t very good. I heard Trent say the show was going to be stripped down but this show seems better suited for a small venue. Trent needs to regroup and get away from this media crap. Then he might find a good woman and do kick ass concerts.

    Jeff Walker | 5/12/2009, 2:22 pm EST

The FL show was the highest price I’ve ever paid for a concert. I’ve seen NIN multiple times, and expected a good show. The FL concert was the most lackluster stage show I have ever been to. We were hoping for a true NIN show of visual and auditory overload not what was had. I left disappointed as did my people, and everyone walking out after the show from what I heard had very similar feelings. We felt like we just got screwed over, the tickets should have been no more than 29.99. Reznor needs to focus more on this tour and not on tweeting his relationship with some Hollywood ho. I heard Atlanta got more screwed than FL. I’m disgusted.

Gibby…get your facts straight moron. NIN has been touring the world for years. Jane’s Addiction came out with three albums. No way NIN should be opening up for them, especially since Trent says this is the farewell tour.

    Shaun | 5/13/2009, 12:18 am EST

There were a lot of very pissed off people at the West Palm show… NIN opened for Jane’s, but nobody knew that was going to happen. I guess my fault for showing up a little late, got there around 7:45 and NIN was already on stage. Then they didn’t even come out for an encore. The stage looked like they were going to come back out for a bit and then all of a sudden the lights came on and they started setting up the stage for Jane’s. Heard a lot of booing… Lots of pissed off people…

Went to the Austin show and it was awful. NIN was lackluster and sounded weak. Audience was not into the music. Trent recently tweeted about it: “Not one of our better shows. Despite our efforts we seemed unable to win over the crowd. Texas ends with a whisper.” about 4 hours ago from Tweetie
Trent should buckle down and focus on the tour and not his cheapo girlfriend.

Did you see Trent Reznor whining about the Austin show on Twitter? Really, is he surprised? IT SUCKED! HE SOUNDED LIKE SHIT. He needs to grow up and stop being a ass. He’s “sad” that the crowd wasn’t into it, well if he had put together a tighter show, we would have been into it.

Trent Reznor is a desperate, middle-aged clown. He whined about the Austin show. Really, is he surprised… He’s spent the last two weeks being a complete jerk who even goes as far as attacking fans, then he’s “sad” that the crowd wasn’t into it. I wasn’t blown away by the NIN/JA show because they sucked. The show was very down tempo.

  53. Shelly says:

Wow! My NIN & JA experience was totally different. I am very sorry for the people in FL who had a terrible experience. I myself was in fact sure that NIN should have headlined but I actually thought it was JA although the ads would suede one otherwise. My roommate and fellow concert goer stated that NIN was headlining. We arrived late. Missed a couple songs, life will go on. We had PIT tix and SO thankful esp. now that I know this is NIN’s FINAL tour. I have said for yrs I want to see them, this was my first show. I want to stalk them to see them again but alas none of the upcoming shows are remotely close to Phx, AZ.

JA is awful to me. Dave is hot but that is the only reedemable (sp) quality in my oh so humble opinion. Their music lacks depth and talent. Not too mention their performance was ridiculous. The lead singer was high or drunk as a skunk and sounded even worse than the shit he sounds like on the radio. We left early after getting pix of Dave half nekit. = )

Still an avid NIN fan. BTW – encore included “Hurt.” YAY!

  54. greg says:

The beauty of opinion is that everyone has one. Thanks to the internet, everyone is also a journalist/concert reviewer/prince of passion or any other label so desired.

LC is entitled to his opinion and to post said opinion on the web. Where he/she has failed is similar to the way the Bush presidency failed: instead of admitting any mistake or error, he/she has found facts and information to support other plausible facts of the argument.

LC, I would be much more apt to come to the defense of your review if you’d simply admit that, as someone apparently in some place of media power (fyi probably not best to say you got the freebie good seats: already gonna piss off your ticket-buying readers and put you in a place of contempt), you failed to do any real research about the subject and indeed gave a lot of word time to things that you could have known prior to arrival. Couple this with doing so when the subject is possibly the most ‘connected’ current major rock band on the internet with some of the most ardent fans and… well, as they say, fail to prepare = prepare to fail.

Consequently, you’ve opened yourself up to these people not only disrespecting your opinion but attacking you personally. Speaking as a former (controversial) music writer that faced a lot harsh reader feedback at the famous alternative weekly newspaper (anyone remember those?) for which he used to write, I understand the feeling.

At this point, it may be best to just move on from these flamers, especially if you truly care about your integrity as a writer and instead put your energy into your next story.

Of course, this is just one person’s opinion – as is all of this.

    Best,
Longtime NiN Fan & former rock journalist

  55. W Axl Rose says:

Good review,Man. I assume most of these people bashing you are from NIN sites and they would do just about anything Trent Reznor said.

  56. Patrick says:

You are a fucking idiot. You obviously don’t know shit about Nine Inch Nails, so don’t open your mouth unless you know what you’re talking about. First of all, I was at that concert and HE DID NOT PLAY ANYTHING FROM GHOSTS. And you would know that if you weren’t a poseur. Second of all, what do you mean Trent is a vampire? Is that an attempt at humor? Thirdly, if you went to as many NIN shows as you claim you have, you would be as sick of seeing ‘hurt’ and ‘closer’ live as everyone else. Fourthly, if you knew anything about NIN, you would know that ‘the perfect drug’ was not meant to be played live. It’s a drum n’ bass based song. And even if it was performable, Trent doesn’t like that song. Oh, and also, Trent explained that having heavy production doesn’t give them the freedom to have fun playing an interchangable setlist and give the TRUE fans what they want.

But one thing you’re right about is that Trent probably doesn’t want to fuck you like an animal, and I know that upsets you because your biggest complaint seems to be that you didn’t get to hear Trent say that.

You also seem to appreciate Dave Navarro’s shirtlessness, and Perry Farrel’s queer mannerisms more than someone with a ‘wife’ should.

So in conclusion, the only things I’ve learned from reading your review is that you have the I.Q. of a retarded baby, and your wife most likely has a dick. So fuck you very much and I hope you choke on your wife’s cock.

    • Loose Cannon says:

That last guy is officially my hero. For the record, I did have my IQ tested recently and it is 10 points higher than a “retarded baby.” So… I’ve got that going for me. The anger of NIN fans compels me.

  57. greyhound says:

It’s true, everyone has the right to express his opinion. I think it’s absolutely ridiculous (and not to mention uttmost immature) to attack someone just because he has a different one. I mean opinions are based on subjective impressions so there is no “right” or “wrong”. LC doesn’t ruin your image of the band when he says the concert sucked. It’s just his personal point of view.

  58. albajih says:

I have read a good joke in internet ;) What do you call bedtime stories for boats? Ferry tales.
